City of Dreams Macau

illumination Physics has been entrusted with the façade lighting design and build for Macau’s ‘City of Dreams’ retail expansion. The new development is the first expansion of this leading resort on the Cotai Strip since it opened in 2009. The resort already contains a Grand Hyatt, Crown Towers and the Macau Hard Rock Hotel. The casino holds 450 gaming tables and has many entertainment options including the House of Dancing Waters which is one of the largest aquatic themed live theatre shows in the world.

The retail expansion has created 17,000 square metres of new high end retail space in addition to ‘The Boulevard’; the existing 16,300 square metre retail facility that creates vital pedestrian connections within the resort.

The expansion is a three storey facility that makes use of landscaped areas within the original boundaries of the property. Two hundred and fifty meters long and 20 metres high, the new elegant glass façade that encompasses the brand-new facility dominates the pedestrian and vehicular entry at the north end of the Estrada Do Istmo (the Macau equivalent of the Las Vegas Strip).

Designed by illumination Physics, there is a powerful LED system embedded in the light-box façade that creates sophisticated dynamic lighting by making use of Very Warm White and Cool White only. The display will be organic in nature, reminding the viewer of the effect of a gentle breeze causing ripples on water. A new linear light fixture was created especially for this project which is an advanced design of illumination Physics previous development of a linear light fixture in which there are two contrasting colours that are focused at different distances from the fixture itself.
