The Arberger Mill
The Arberger Mühle foundation village is located in the middle of the old town of Arbergens near Bremen in Germany. It was built in 1803 and is a Dutch mill set in impressive grounds. It is the oldest preserved mill in Germany, and has been a heritage listed building since 1973.
“Connecting generations“ is the claim of the Arberger Mühle foundation village. It lives up to this claim in special ways. Within the grounds is a historic barn and a traditional bakery offer an attractive setting for events that delight young and old alike - from summer parties to concerts. The close cooperation with clubs, schools and kindergartens in the district also ensures varied encounters.
Last but not least, it is the tenants, their families, friends and neighbours from the district who liven up the foundation village with their ideas.
As part of the extensive renovation of the mill, we were asked by the owner whether we wanted to participate in the development and implementation of a lighting concept for the outer facade of the mill.
The owner's aim was to integrate the mill into the cityscape as an outstanding building, but, as the premises are also used for events, to be able to change the colour of the lower part of the façade on special occasions.
This, however, must be achieved with the lowest possible energy consumption.
What looked simple at first soon proved otherwise. The ground plan and the architecture are complex, and the extensive requirements of the monument protection authority had to be taken into account.
Several test mock-ups were necessary during which the responsible monument conservator was always present, until we had found the ideal technical solution.
We provided IP Linear Wash Lights special lengths and with specially adapted asymmetrical optics for grazing applications.
IP Circular Wash Lights were also used strategically.
illumination Physics produces recessed downlights that are rated at IP67 and these were use in the soffit of the first floor.
All of the luminaires made use of our Quattro 4 die LED chip in RGBW where the W is 3000K.
Depending on the installation location, the light fixtures were painted in the respective colour of the building area and installed as inconspicuously as possible in coordination with the monument conservator.
We installed and programmed a DMX playback system that allows the owner to select from 6 static and animated lighting scenes by way of a touch screen interface. In this way the Arberger Mill can adapt to the nature of a particular event, be colourful or traditional, Animated or static. Connecting generations.
Since the restoration and preservation of the historic mill is only possible with a great deal of private and honorary commitment, we took on the lighting planning, programming and construction supervision as a sponsorship of this project.
